Beyond Single Servers

So far, you've used individual MCP servers — each doing one thing well. But real-world workflows cross boundaries. You need to query a database, then send an email with the results, then log the action to a file. That requires three different servers working together.

The good news: Claude handles multi-server orchestration natively. You don't need to build a coordinator — you configure multiple servers, and Claude chains them automatically based on the conversation context.

The challenge: managing 5-10 servers gets messy fast. That's where gateways and architectural patterns come in.

Pattern 1: Implicit Tool Chaining

The simplest multi-server pattern. You configure multiple servers, and Claude calls tools from different servers in sequence to complete a task.

For example, with GitHub, PostgreSQL, and Slack servers configured, you can say: "Check if there are any open PRs that touch the users table, query the users table for recent changes, and post a summary to #dev-updates."

Claude will:

Call GitHub's search_pull_requests tool
Call PostgreSQL's query tool
Call Slack's send_message tool

You didn't write any orchestration code. Claude figured out the sequence from your natural language request.

When Implicit Chaining Breaks Down

Implicit chaining works beautifully for straightforward sequences. It struggles when:

The chain requires error handling with fallbacks (retry with different parameters)
Steps need to run in parallel (Claude is sequential by default)
Data from one step needs complex transformation before passing to the next
You need guaranteed execution order across many steps

For these cases, you need explicit patterns.

Pattern 2: Composite MCP Server

Instead of relying on Claude to chain separate servers, build a single server that internally orchestrates multiple data sources. This gives you full control over the workflow.

Pattern 3: The MCP Gateway

When you have 10+ servers across a team, a gateway pattern becomes essential. An MCP gateway sits between the AI client and your backend servers, providing:

Centralized authentication — one OAuth flow for all servers
Rate limiting — per-user quotas across all tools
Audit logging — unified logging for compliance
Tool routing — intelligent dispatch to the right backend server
Access control — team-based permissions (marketing can use Slack tools, not database tools)

Gateway Architecture

The gateway itself is an MCP server that proxies requests to backend servers. From Claude's perspective, it looks like one server with many tools.

Pattern 4: Server-per-Environment

A common production pattern: separate MCP servers for different environments, each with appropriate access levels.

The key insight: the same server code connects to different backends based on configuration. Your development server has full read-write access; staging has read-write with audit logging; production has read-only access and mandatory approval workflows.

Pattern 5: Event-Driven MCP

Standard MCP is request-response: Claude calls a tool, gets a result. But some workflows need the server to push information to Claude — new errors detected, deployment completed, threshold breached.

MCP supports this through notifications and the Streamable HTTP transport. The server can send notifications that trigger Claude to take action without waiting for user input.

Most teams start with implicit chaining, evolve to composite servers for their core workflows, and adopt a gateway when they hit 5-10 servers. The patterns aren't mutually exclusive — you can use a gateway that routes to both simple servers and composite servers.
