Glama: MCP directory with reviews and ratings. Discovery-focused.
Enterprise internal registries: Companies building private MCP registries for their internal tools (the biggest opportunity).

Publishing to MCP Registries

To publish your server to a registry:

Package properly: npm package with clear README, schema documentation, and usage examples
Create a server manifest: JSON file describing your server's tools, required auth, and configuration
Submit for review: Most registries review submissions for quality and security
Maintain compatibility: Keep your server compatible with the latest MCP protocol version

Pricing Strategies for MCP-as-a-Service

Four pricing models work for MCP servers:

1. Free + Open Source

Open source the server. Monetize via consulting, premium features, or hosted version. Best for: building reputation, developer tools, community-driven projects.

Examples: most current MCP servers on GitHub.

2. Freemium (Free Tier + Paid Tier)

Free tier with rate limits (100 calls/day). Paid tier with higher limits, additional tools, and priority support. Best for: servers that wrap paid APIs where you can absorb free-tier costs.

Pricing: $10-50/month for individual developers, $100-500/month for teams.

3. Pay-Per-Call

Charge per tool invocation. Best for: expensive operations (image generation, data analysis, ML inference). Typical pricing: $0.001-0.01 per call depending on compute cost.

4. Enterprise License

Annual contracts with SLAs, custom deployment, and dedicated support. Best for: security-sensitive servers, compliance-heavy industries. Pricing: $5,000-50,000/year.

Building Multi-Tool Server Bundles

Single-purpose servers are commodities. Bundled servers create lock-in and higher value.

Instead of building one GitHub server, build a "Developer Productivity Suite" MCP server that includes: GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion, and CI/CD tools. Users get one server that replaces five. You charge more than any individual server would command.

The bundle strategy works because AI agents work best with fewer, richer servers rather than many single-purpose ones (less tool selection confusion for the AI).

Enterprise White-Labeling

The biggest revenue opportunity: enterprises need custom MCP servers for their internal systems (Salesforce, SAP, internal databases, proprietary APIs). They don't have teams with MCP expertise.

The white-label play:

Build a configurable MCP server framework
Enterprise provides API specs for their systems
You configure and deploy a custom server on their infrastructure
Charge setup fee ($10K-50K) + annual maintenance ($5K-20K/year)

This is consulting work that scales because your framework does the heavy lifting. Each new client requires configuration, not new code.

The Future: MCP as Critical Infrastructure

Every major AI company is adopting MCP or building compatible protocols. Within 2 years, MCP servers will be as fundamental as REST APIs. The developers who build expertise now will have a significant advantage when enterprises start their AI tool infrastructure buildouts.

Start with one high-quality, well-tested, well-documented MCP server. Publish it. Get user feedback. Then expand to bundles, managed hosting, and enterprise contracts.

The API economy took 10 years to mature. The MCP economy will move faster because the infrastructure already exists. Position yourself now.
